XTERRA Monte Sano 15k Trail Race

The second annual XTERRA Alabama Monte Sano 15k Trail Race was Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville.  There was also a 5k trail race, but there were no Limestone County finishers in the 5k. This race is part of a trail racing series that you can learn more about at http://www.dirtyspokes.com/.  The other races in the Alabama series are at Cheaha State Park and Oak Mountain State Park.  Because it is part of this series, this race draws runners from all over the state.

The 15k course at Monte Sano is a difficult, technical course with at least 3 major climbs.  Unlike many other trail races, the distance on this course is an accurate 15k or 9.3 miles.  Anything less than a 10 minute per mile average pace is difficult on this course.

The overall winner was Brandon Mader of Huntsville in dominating fashion with a 1:04:25, over 8 minutes ahead of  his nearest competitor.  The female overall winner, also with a dominant performance, was Limestone County runner Heather Day of Athens in 1:28:28, over 5 minutes ahead of second place.  Congratulations Heather!  The complete results are available at the Dirty Spokes website.

Limestone County finishers are listed below, all from Athens.

  1. Heather Day, 1:28:28 (Female winner)
  2. Lanier Greenhaw, 1:29:46 (3rd in Age Group award)

Fleet Feet Monte Sano 15k

The annual Fleet Feet Monte Sano 15k was Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville. Elkmont Lions Club Rails to Trails 10k

The annual Elkmont Rails to Trails 10k benefiting the Lions Club was Saturday, September 25, 2010 in Elkmont, AL.  Weather was a challenge as rain poured on the runners.  This was an added dimension to an already interesting race.

This race starts on the road and ends on the crushed gravel trail.  The start is rolling, but mostly downhill and fast.  Then, the race turns across a field and the last 3 miles or so are a very gradual, but noticeable, incline.  It is a scenic race that is well supported by the community.  It is the only 10k race in Limestone County.

The overall winner was Brandon York in 33:09.  The female winner was Mary Helen Sanders in 48:02.  The masters winner was George DeWitt in 35:58.  The female masters winner was Wu Yuling in 48:47.  The hometowns are not listed in the results.  However, since this was a Limestone County race, reading the results will turn up some familiar names.  The overall results and the age group results are available at the HTC Website.

Monte Sano Five and Dime

The 39th annual Monte Sano 10k and 5k Road Races were held at Monte Sano State Park Saturday, September 4, 2010.  This is a long standing event that is part of the HTC Grand Prix series.  This race draws a large crowd and the 10k is the first and main event.  The 10k starts at 8:00 AM and the men and women start separately in the 5k with the men starting at 9:30 and the women at 9:40.

The 10k race is a double loop of the 5k course.  The course can't really be described as fast, but it isn't particularly challenging, either.  There are a couple of rolling hills and there is an out and back on a narrow trail that will slow runners down some.  There was a very nice break in the heat that was most welcome by the runners!  The cooler temps probably made up for the course.

The 10k
The 10k overall winner was Josh Whitehead of Madison in 33:18, just edging out 2nd place 22 year old Will Rodgers of Huntsville in 33:26.  The female winner was Candace Jacobs of Huntsville in 37:18.  The masters winner was Donald Bowman in 35:36.  The female masters winner was Limestone County's Whitney Hollingsworth of Elkmont in 46:07.  Congratulations Whitney!  Overall results and age group results are at the HTC website.

Killen Founders Day 5k

The Killen Founders Day 5k was Saturday, August 28, 2010 in Killen, AL.  This annual event usually draws a fast crowd.  Several North Alabama Cross Country teams use this race as a fitness test going into the beginning of the Cross Country season, so there are usually lots of younger finishers.  I've never attended this event, but the times indicate that it must have been a bit cooler there yesterday morning and that the course must be really fast!

The overall winner was Josh Whitehead of Madison in 15:28.  Since David Riddle has moved away, Josh has replaced him as the top North Alabama runner. I expect that he'll continue to improve.  The female winner was 13 year old Brandi Fennel of Florence in 23:33.  The masters winner was Lance Winders of Mansfield, TN, in 18:00.  The female masters winner was Sherea Burns of Florence in 25:04.

HiWAAY Sprint Triathlon

The 30th annual Huntsville HiWAAY Sprint Triathlon was Saturday, August 21, 2010.  This race is an interesting triathlon because it is a "reverse" triathlon.  Triathlons are usually Swim, Bike, Run. This one is Run, Bike, Swim, avoiding the dreaded "BRICK" (Bike, Run, ICK!).  Also, it is a sprint distance (3 mile run, 6 mile bike ride, and 400 meter pool swim) which makes it eminently do-able for the beginning triathlete.

The weather was warm, but not unbearably hot until after the finish of the race.  The race starts at the Cross Country Running Park in Huntsville.  That is a difficult 3 mile course with one major hill.  The race finishes at the Huntsville Natatorium.  For more information about the race, visit http://www.hsvsprinttri.hiwaay.net/.

The overall winner was Andrew Hodges of Huntsville.  The female winner was Rachel Eubanks of Harvest.  The masters winner was John Hill of Bentonville, AR.  The female masters winner Clarissa Sharp of Huntsville.

There were several Limestone County finishers in this event.  They are listed below.  The complete results, including overall, age group, splits, and team results are available at the HTC Website.

  1. Myles Underwood, Athens, 54:43
  2. Heather Haney, Athens, 57:25

Duck and Run Update!

Yesterday, Phillip Dean and I went out to the Duck and Run course and found all the markers. That tour of the course REALLY got me excited about this year's race. This years race is going to be great!

I have lined up a couple of new sponsors that I hopefully will announce soon. We will have a Friday evening packet pickup and late registration this year, also! Details soon!

Go ahead and make your plans for September 18, 2010 at 8:00 AM. Are you not in shape for a 5k? There is plenty of time! Check out the Couch to 5k program on Cool Running's web site. If you start next week and commit to 3 days per week, you can be ready for the Duck and Run 5k!

Interested in volunteering to help with this race? Drop me an email at duckandrun5k@yahoo.com to let me know and I can put you to work on race day.

Alabama A&M 10k

The Alabama A&M 10k Road Race was held Saturday, June 12, 2010 on the campus of Alabama A&M University in Normal, AL. The Alabama A&M 10k road race is one of the longest running races in the area. Saturday was the 39th running. It once finished on the track at the old A&M football stadium. There is a lot of history with this race. It was fascinating today to hear stories of A&M 10k races of years past.

This is also one of the toughest races in the area. The second Saturday in June in North Alabama will be both hot and humid. Today was no exception. Add to that one of the steepest hills on any road race. And then you run that hill twice. Hardcore runners in the area know and love (hate) this race.

There were a few Limestone County Runners who finished this hot, humid, hilly, difficult 10k. Congratulations!

Changes

I wanted to call attention to a couple of changes to the blog. Obviously you'll notice the new template. I had to do that to get some of the customizations that I needed into the blog. Your feedback is welcome.

You'll notice the pages across the top, Home, Duck and Run 5k, and North Alabama Running Calendar.

On the Duck and Run 5k page you will find the most up to date information about the Duck and Run 5k, which will be Saturday, September 18, 2010, in Athens. Please make plans to join us for what will be a GREAT event this year! Tell your friends!

On the North Alabama Running Calendar page you'll find an embedded Google calendar of races and training runs in the area. Little of this is original. I've collected information from various websites about races in the area. Let me know if you know of a race that should be added. I've tried to keep the focus on races that are within 50 or 60 miles of Athens, but I will stretch that out for something that I find particularly interesting. Right now, it is current through June and I will be adding races as I have time and as I learn about them. Regarding training runs, I've listed the Sunday morning 10 miler that has been going on for a couple of years now. I'll keep group training runs confined to Athens/Limestone County only.

Enjoy!

Swampers 5k

The 6th annual Swampers 5k started at Muscle Shoals Middle School on Saturday, April 24, 2010. This is known as a well organized, flat, fast 5k race. Last year, the Swampers 5k was the host of the RRCA State 5k Championship. Weather was a looming threat, but the race went on anyway.

The overall winner was Hirbo Hirbo of Florence in 15:55. The overall female winner was Ilham Ali of Muscle Shoals in 21:47. The masters winner was Stacey Lemay of Florence in 19:20. The female masters winner was Mary Elaine Shirah of Tuscumbia in 23:31. The overall results and the age group results are available at the Shoals TRAC website.

Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon

The Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon took place in Nashville, TN, on Saturday, April 24, 2010. This race is part of the nation wide Rock -n- Roll Marathon series of races. These events are known for the huge crowds of runners and the live bands and cheering fans along the route. This event certainly fit that description. Race management announced a combined field of over 32,000 runners. Several Limestone County runners made the trip to soak in the experience.

Weather was certainly a factor for this race. There was rain in the early morning hours and possibly severe thunderstorms forecast for the late morning and early afternoon. Because of this, the race started 15 minutes early. Also, the weather contingency plan was for marathoners who were on a pace slower than a 4:30 marathon at the 11.2 mile mark to be diverted to run the half marathon course.

The rain and thunder began at about 10:30, and the thunderstorms became severe before noon. This caused many marathon runners to be diverted, even though they were on a faster than 4:30 pace. Also, it caused many marathon runners to be removed from the course after passing the 11.2 mark, but before finishing the marathon. Those who were removed are listed as half marathon finishers. Keep that in mind as you're viewing the half marathon results below.

The full results are searchable on the Country Music Marathon website. Limestone County finishers are listed below. There are results for runners diverted to the full marathon finish and to the half marathon finish. I am not sure what that means, unless it is referring to runners who were removed from the course after the storms began.

Boston!!

Patriots' Day. The third Monday in April. Known to Bostonians as "Marathon Day". The 114th running of the Boston Marathon was Monday, April 19, 2010. This is the world's oldest annual marathon. It is arguably the most prestigious of all foot races. Sure, New York, Chicago, Berlin, and London are all unique in their own ways. But there is only one Boston.

It is the only annual major American marathon that requires a qualifying time. As such, it is often thought of as an "Olympics for the people". Qualifying is not easy, but it is attainable for most runners. If you talk to a distance runner for any amount of time, you will likely hear the term "BQ". Boston Qualifying times are generally considered a mark of excellence. Even competing in the event is a noteworthy accomplishment.

Locals
The results are available and searchable at the Boston Marathon website. To my knowledge, there were no Limestone County finishers in the 2010 Boston Marathon. However, there were 65 finishers from the state of Alabama. Three of the top four Alabama finishers were from the Huntsville area, Tim Vinson, Todd White, and Dink Taylor.

Tim ran an amazing 2:41:20, which is a marathon PR for him. Todd ran a 2:49:52, an impressive sub 2:50. Dink, a local running legend and owner of Fleet Feet in Huntsvile, ran yet another sub 3:00:00 marathon with a 2:57:32.

Elites
The overall winner was Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot of Kenya in a course record smashing 2:05:52. Cheruiyot ran a 4:36 22nd mile, a 4:44 23rd mile, and a 4:36 24th mile mostly alongside Deriba Merga of Ethiopia. That blistering 24th mile put some distance between him and Merga. Merga then dropped to 3rd place behind fellow Ethiopian Tekeste Kebede. Read the full story at http://www.baa.org/BostonMarathon/2010Story.asp.

The top American finisher was Ryan Hall in 2:08:41 which was good for 4th overall. Hall led for much of the first half but fell off the pace early in the second half. Hall missed standing on the podium by a mere 2 seconds as he was unable to overtake Merga despite a strong surge in the final 10k. You can read Ryan's recap at http://ryanhall.competitor.com/.

The women's race was decided by 3 seconds, marking the 3rd consecutive year that the women's race was decided by 3 seconds or less. Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia faded in the final miles, but was able to hold off surging Tatyana Pushkareva of Russia. Erkesso ran 2:26:11 while Pushkareva was close behind with a 2:26:14. There was also a tight race for the final podium spot as Salina Kosgei of Kenya finished in 2:28:35, one second ahead of Waynishet Girma of Ethiopia. The top American female was Paige Higgins in 2:36:00.

Cookie Dash 5k

The 27th running of the Cookie Dash 5k (formerly called the Re-Creation Run) was Saturday, April 17, 2010. This is a well established race that always has a good turnout. This year was no exception. The race filled up and closed its registration earlier this week.

This is not a fast course by any definition. It has two cone turn-arounds and one cul-de-sac turn around. That's a lot of turning in a 5k! Also, this race is rolling and has a significant uphill start. It's a rare 5k course that has many runners running the 1st mile as their slowest.

The overall winner was Brandon York of Huntsville in 15:47. The female overall winner was Limestone County's own Whitney Hollingsworth of Elkmont in 21:43. The masters winner was David Purinton in 17:36. The female masters winner was Roberta Hauck of Madison in 22:02. The overall results, age group results, and awards are available at the HTC website.

Limestone County finishers are listed below.
  1. Bud Bowen, Elkmont, 20:57
  2. Whitney Hollingsworth, Elkmont, 21:43 (Overall winner!)

Other Races April 10-11

River City Run 10k, 5k, and Half Mile Fun Run
The annual River City Run was held in Point Mallard Park in Decatur on Saturday, April 10, 2010. This is a long standing race in the area that always draws the top talent in North Alabama. This is the best chance for a 10k PR in the spring in North Alabama. There aren't many 10k races in this area, and the other 10k races are on notoriously difficult courses.

There was a strong turnout at the River City Run this year. This years number exceeded last year's number when the River City 10k hosted the Alabama 10k State Championship. The official results are on the River City Runners web site.

The 10k winner was Hirbo Hirbo in 33:21. The female winner was Emily Hardin in 36:55. The masters winner was George DeWitt in 34:56. The female masters winner was Theresa Ball in 42:47.

Chick Fil A 5k

The inaugural Chick Fil A 5k benefitting the Jessica Elkins Meningitis Awareness Foundation was held in downtown Athens on April 10, 2010. The reports are that there were 465 registrants for the race and there were 414 finishers according to the official results. That was beyond the expectations of many!

Of the 414 finishers, nearly 300 were from Limestone County. So, rather than list the finishers individually here, check out the official results which nearly reads like a list of Limestone County finishers! The HTC website has also posted Age Group results and a list of award winners.

Brandon Mader of Huntsville was the overall winner in 16:12, and he led the race from the start. The top Limestone County finisher was Eric Patterson of Athens in 18:50, 4th overall.

Chick Fil A was the title sponsor for this event, and the organization and execution of this race was professional. There were Chick Fil A cows greeting the children and cheering on the runners. Jessica Elkins' father was there near the aid station encouraging runners as they passed. Mayor Dan Williams was the MC for the awards presentation.

The weather was sunny with calm winds and temperatures in the 40s at race start, but warmed into the 60s for the awards. It was a perfect spring day for a great event for the city of Athens!

All of you Limestone County runners who participated in this event, remember the Duck and Run 5k on September 18!

Also, I found some pictures from the Chick Fil A 5k on the AthensPlus website, so I wanted to share that link with my readers. I sure enjoyed browsing the pictures! Enjoy! http://athensplus.com/5krunwalk7.htm

The idea behind the 12 hour run is to run as many laps around the 1 mile loop as possible in 12 hours. Partial laps do not count. The runner who runs the most laps in the 12 hours is the winner.

The only Limestone County finisher was Glen King of Athens. Glen competed in the 12 hour run. He ran 65 miles and was 6th overall!

The results are here.

The 50 mile run is Alabama's only USATF certified 50 mile race. The overall winner of the 50 mile was Allen Smith of Auburn, AL. He ran the 50 miles in 7:09:38. The women's 50 mile winner was Betty Holder of Ringgold, GA in 10:50:04. Marcus Farris of Auburn, AL set a 50 mile state age record for 19 year old males. He ran the 50 miles in 7:22:52.

The 12 hour run winner was Jim O'Brien of Chicago, IL. He ran 76 miles in 12 hours. The women's winner was Liz Bauer of Plainville, GA. She ran 71 miles.

Chick-fil-A Charity 5k

The inaugural Chick-fil-A 5K race is set for April 10, 2010 with proceeds going to the Jessica Elkins Meningitis Awareness Foundation. Starting on Washington Street near downtown Athens, the race will begin at 8:00 a.m. and follow a course which accomodates both runners and walkers.

The Jessica Elkins Meningitis Foundation was founded in memory of Jessica who died December 26, 2007 after a five-day battle with meningitis. Her parents work to educate the community about meningitis and are advocates of menactra, a vaccine against meningitis that is available.

The fee is $25 and the course runs on the old Summer Sun course in Athens, certified course AL02010JD.

Upcoming Races...

I just got a question about how to find upcoming races in the area. I am working on adding a North Alabama race calendar to this blog. Hopefully, that will be done in the near future.

In the mean time, the best sources of information are the following sites...

On Your Mark @ Highland Park 5k

The On Your Mark at Highland Park 5k and 1 Mile was Saturday, March 6, 2010, in Muscle Shoals, AL. The results are on the Shoals TRAC website. Overall 5k results, 5k age group results, 1 Mile overall results, and 1 Mile age group results are available there.

The overall winner was Shane O'Neill of Huntsville, AL, with a time of 16:53. The overall female winner was 12 year old Rachel Stowe of Town Creek, AL, with a time of 23:18. The masters winner was Wayne Johnson of Tuscumbia, AL, with a time of 20:10. The female masters winner was Pam Berry of Hartselle, AL, with a time of 25:29.

It's both remarkable and unusual for a 12 year old to win a race! Her time of 23:18 would have been competitive at many races. That is an impressive performance, and there could be a very bright future in competitive running for Rachel.

Limestone County finishers include the following runners.

5k
  1. Justin Watson of Athens, 22:34
  2. Mark Swanner of Athens, 23:48
  3. Jessica Dunnavant of Athens, 33:09

1 Mile

  1. Brooklyn Swanner of Athens, 10:07
  2. Mark Swanner of Athens, 10:08

It's good to see Mark's name back in race results. He is coming back from injury. He's been running around Athens in the afternoons and evenings. It's good to see that recovery is coming along for him.

Mount Cheaha 50k

The fifth annual Mount Cheaha 50k trail race was Saturday, February 27, 2010 in the Talledega National Forest. This was the first year that this race was part of the Montrail Ultra Cup series. Being part of that series increases the pool of talent that the race draws. The nickname for this race is "The Race to the Top of Alabama" because the finish is on top of Mount Cheaha at Alabama's highest point at 2407 feet.

Mount Cheaha 50k is a point to point 50 kilometer (~31 miles) race that starts at Porter's Gap trailhead near Talledega and finishes at the summit of Mount Cheaha at the Bald Rock Lodge. It mostly follows the Pinhoti Trail. The course reportedly gains 7000 feet in elevation, covers some very technical, rocky terrain, and has multiple creek crossings, one of which can be nearly waist deep. Judging by the finishing times, this is Alabama's toughest trail race.

The only Limestone County finisher was Glen King of Athens. Glen ran the 50k in 7:06:28 for 77th overall. Congratulations, Glen, on finishing the toughest 50k course in Alabama!

The winner was Dane Mitchell of Birmingham who shattered the course record by running it in 4:00:25. This is the second week in a row that Dane has broken a course record in Alabama. He broke the Black Warrior 25k course record on Saturday, February 20. The masters winner and second overall was Dewayne Satterfield of Huntsville. Dewayne ran an impressive 4:36:00, especially considering he won the Black Warrior 50k the previous Saturday.

The womens overall winner was Annette Bednosky of Jefferson, NC, in 5:09:41. The women's masters winner was Sally Brooking of Marietta, GA, in 5:47:46.
